LEADERSHIP
- Every Group Leader must complete and return a
"Staff Certification Register" with the
Reservation Information Packet at least two months prior
to arrival. This Register is to be used by the Group
Leader to document the dates that each worker has
completed the required qualifications. The H. E.
Butt Foundation requires all groups to provide certified
Lifeguards and Medical Staff. Photocopies of each
lifeguard certificate and medical staff
certificate/license must be submitted with the Staff
Certification Register. "Yough camp"
workers require additional certifications (see Texas Youth
Camp Safety & Health Rule
§265.12.)
MEDICAL
- At a minimum, a person with an American Red Cross
Community First-Aid and Safety Certificate or equivalent
must be with your group at all times. Current
license or certificate must be presented at camp to the
Guest Services Manager. We do not provide
first-aid providers.
- In the event of a need for further
medical consultation, a physician in Kerrville is on call
at all times to advise your group's First-Aid
Provider. Contact Guest Services Manager
for phone number. There is normally a charge for after-hours
telephone calls.
- In the event of serious injury or
illness, the physician on call must be consulted
immediately and the parents or guardians notified as soon
as possible. Any serious accident, illness, or death
involving any camper must be reported to the Camp Staff
immediately.
- A written arrangement has been
made with Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital Emergency
Room in Kerrville (830-896-4200) for medical treatment in
the case of serious illness or injury. Your group
must provide your own transportation for any sick or
injured camper. If the emergency is
life-threatening, first call 911, then call Camp Staff at
232-6671. Always call the Camp Staff!
- Your group must
provide your own fully equipped first-aid kit, which
should be readily available during all camp activities.
- A person with a communicable
disease or who is suspected of such illness must be
isolated to insure both safety to other persons and quiet
to the patient. Any child that is isolated must have
adult supervision.
- A bound medical log listing date,
name of the patient, ailment, probable cause, and the
treatment prescribed must be kept by your First-Aid
Provider. A spiral notebook will satisfy this
requirement.
- Your group's First-Aid Provider
must keep an individual health history record on each
person in your group. This record must be present in
your campsite during your stay and contain the person's
name, date of birth, allergies, immunizations, current
medications, parent's name and address with telephone
number, and parent or guardian authorization for emergency
medical care if the need arises.
- All prescription medications must
be kept under lock, except when in the possession of your
authorized First-Aid Provider. Medication shall be
administered by your First-Aid Provider only. Please
bring a locking box to secure medications.
Waterfront
- All waterfront activities must be
attended and supervised by an adult who holds a current
American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or its
equivalent. Certificate must be presented at camp to
the Guest Services Manager. A minimum of one
certified lifeguard and one trained adult lookout per 15
swimmers is required. We do not provide
lifeguards.
- Your Waterfront Director is
responsible for procedures of waterfront safety and must
insure that they are strictly enforced. Waterfront
staff must not engage in any other duties or activities
that would prevent their attention or response to those in
their charge.
- American Red Cross, YMCA, or Boy
Scouts of America swim tests must be used to determine
each child's swimming ability. Children must then be
confined to areas suitable to their respective swimming
skills.
- A method of checking swimmers in
and out of the water must be established and
enforced. Recommended methods are the check or buddy
board, the buddy system, the colored cap system, or any
combination of these.
- Life-saving equipment (shepherd's crook and
flotation device) is provided
at your campsite's swimming area. Your certified
Waterfront Director is responsible to provide all other
equipment and determine that the
life-saving equipment is operational and immediately
available for use in case of an emergency.
- U. S. Coastguard-approved life
preservers are provided at your campsite for
watercraft. Each occupant of a watercraft must wear a
properly fitted life preserver at all times while in the
watercraft.
- WITHOUT A CERTIFIED LIFEGUARD,
A GROUP MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY WATERFRONT ACTIVITIES.
Adherence to the Texas Youth Camps
Safety and Health Act is required. A complete listing of
these regulations may be obtained online from: www.dshs.state.tx.us/youthcamp/default.shtm
